oil pan

what all do i have to do to change the oil pan gasket. i have heard that you have to disconect the motor mounts and lift the motor up like 3 inches but i was wonering what all i need to disconnect before i do that. or if i even need to lift the motor, it looks like i might be able to wiggle the pan out betweent he crossmember but it will be close

any replys will be appreciated

There are some out there in Ford land that say you can replace the gasket just by dropping the pan and removing the old and installing the new, without removing the pan. That works if the old gasket comes right off. You can't just wiggle the pan out because the oil pump pickup won't let you, it gets in the way. If you have to remove the pan, you will have to unbolt the motor mounts and jack up the engine, I used a block of wood under the crankshaft damper.
NOTE_______ BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU JACK UP THE ENGINE AS THE BACK OF THE ENGINE WILL HIT THE WIPER MOTOR AND BREAK IT OFF. You will also have to unbolt the oil pump pickup and let it fall into the pan. It is possible to replace the pick up when reassembling, there is just enough room to get a hand in to hold the pick up while tightining the attaching bolts. Use a very long extention on a 3/8 drive to do it and don't over tighten as the pump is aluminum and you will strip out the pickup holding bolts
GOOD LUCK and read the instructions first!!

You're right about V-8s, but offroadguy has an I-6.

If you unbolt the fan shroud & engine mounts, you can lift the engine & totally remove the pan with little trouble.

steve83, I have a 1990 EFI 300 and if you want to remove the pan you have to drop the pump pickup , I know because I had to do this to look at a bearing.

well i just got done puttin in the new gasket. it took me and a buddy 6 hrs. actually i couldn't get the oil pan out no matter how high i raised it. the back end of the pan kept hitting the tranny. after a while of fooling with it we decided to just manuver the gasket around the pickup and lay it on the top and we silconed the gasket and tourqued it down. i am gonna let it sit tonite and put some oil in it before school tomorrow. i will let u know if it worked.

I pulled the one on my old 300ci (carb) clean out just by raising the engine, but I've never tried it on the 4.9L (EFI).

yea, well i put oil in it today and have been driving it around and she doesn't leak as bad but it is still pretty bad. i think the seal jumped out of the groove around the rear main. so i will give it another shot before i pay someone 300 bucks to do it.
