I remember when broomsticks used to be solid wood, but for that matter, a solid plug in the lines would work also. The water pump pressure would just divert the flow to the path of least resistance so you don't run the risk of it blowing the plug out from increased pressure.

I stocked up on broomstick from the 5&dime way before anyone had heard of a dollar store.
I learned my lesson on heater cores a few years ago. I had a 64 pick up that I towed my boat with. Went for a drive to the lake one weekend with a buddy and his new wife. She had about passed out by the time we got there. Turns out the heater vent wouldn't completely shut anymore, and with no AC in the truck, in summertime in Texas, it got a little warm on her side.
Ended up bypassing the heater core that weekend, and every summer after that as a cheaper fix.
