Brake proportioning valve
The proporting valve on my 1973 has a pin with a spool on the end that is pulled out to bleed the front disc brakes. Have wraped a tie wire around the spool with a weight attached to the wire to pull out the pin, since the pin is vertical orientation.
The proportioning valve bleeder pin on my 1976 is different than the 1973 bleeder pin. The 1976 pin must be push inward to bleed the front disc brakes. The pin is horizontal orientation. The 1976 proporting valve bleed pin is supposed to covered by a rubber boot.
Have also noticed the aftermarket replacement proportioning valves for 73-79 are modeled after the 1975-1979 style.
Question:
Has anyone figured out how to push in the bleeder pin, work the brake pedal and bleed the front disc brake caliper all at the same time without a three man crew?
Seems like a special bleeder tool is required for the later style proportioning valve when bleeding the front disc calipers.
I think on a push in button pro valve, 1st bleed sys, then push in button to center the floating piston...??

The pin is pushed inward to bleed the front brakes. Believe this is the reason of so many threads about problems bleeding the front caliper brakes.

To push the bleed pin inward was thinking about removing the rubber boot and use a small two jaw bearing puller with the threaded rod pushing against the bleed pin with the two jaws placed over the threaded nut grooves that hold the rubber boot.

The pin must be pushed inward to allow fluid flow through the front end of the proportioning valve. Under normal operation the spring loaded spool delays the fluid pressure to the front calipers and replaced the single Hold-Off valve used prior to 1971 with the combination front Hold-Off valve section and rear proportioning valve section to reduce pressure to the rear drum brakes to prevent drum lockup upon severve brake operaton.

The center located warning switch indicates if there is an out of balance of pressure between the front section and the rear section. It is not used as a primary brake light switch.<O

A simple L shaped sheet metal clip with a slot does the job of holding the metering hold-off valve pin inward while bleeding the brake lines.
One of the bolts that fasten the combination metering/proportioning valve to the bracket is loosened. The L bracket slot is placed under the bolt head while pushing the pin inward, then tighten up the bolt to the hold the L bracket in place. Now the pin is pushed inward with no hands, so the brake fluid will flow to the front brake calipers.
This procedure is required when bleeding the brakes on a 1975-1979 F150/F250.
