The jumper wire is the way I would have gone.
If all you got was sparks and no engagement of the starter, remove the starter and have it checked/rebuilt/replaced.
(Does not explain the radio playing/not playing though.)
Theres threads on here about the radio not working in 02's.
Ive had that problem before the radio doesn't work and either does the windows but its usually only for a minute or so after first start up.
I thought that was what it was doing this time that's why I shut it off and was going to startup again.
Yep the main power cable is direct from the batteries, to it'll arc! I'm happy we've isolated the starter!
For everything else, you need to open the fuse box and check each and every fuse. Also, there are a few relays under the hood by the firewall, but those don't control the inside operations of the cabin.

Good luck!

???????????????? Wouldn't you say its probably the starter and everything else is ok?
I thought your radio and other power accessories were having issues. I might have miss understood. Yes the starter seems to be the root cause of your starting issues.

Gotcha.... thanks but the radio and stuffs been doing that for years , I was only worried about getting it going so I could go to work.
Its not the fuses or anything or it would never work but the radio always comes back on.
Priced out starters and the cheapest I can find is $250+tx., they have gone up since last one I bought.
If you want to see if the starter is good, you can take a jumper and jump te starter. On the passenger side fender, by the vaccume pump, you will find a yellow wire that can't be disconnected. That is your starter wire from the key.
Disconnect it and jump it to the battery. If it turns over, then you know the starter is good. This test takes the computer and most electronics out of the equation.
The relays under the dash click, and one could be bad. Swap in the defroster relay with the starter relay to test.
Hook the truck up to a good sized running car, after a few minutes and the jump car in fast idle, try and jump off your truck.
Your issue is either:
Bad relay
Bad battery
Bad starter
I had the trifecta happen a week after buying my 2002 excursion. Had to replace it all! Good news is I was able to test it all out and got the truck running.
Good luck!
Curious, you say it can't be disconnected and then you say to disconnect it.
Still no start?
Could it be the neutral/safety switch?
It turns over when I jump across wire that Jesser told me about?
Vinford: So you have the starter replaced, now pull out your book and find the relay under the dash. You can swap it with the rear defroster relay and see if that solves the issue.
You now have a good starter, so it's the electronics that isn't letting power make it down the line. Look at the transmission ensure it's aligned.
If the relay under the dash doesn't help, try putting the truck in natural to try and start the truck.
Finally while you are in the fuse box, double check to ensure all the fuses are good.

I changed that thing and it now starts.
Gear shift feels funny but everything seems to work INCLUDING the radio?
Thank you and everyone else for the help.

OUTSTANDING!!!
I'm very happy it's started and running. If the shifting feels funny it could just be the new wearing in. Also check that the two bolts that connect the shift lever are tight.
