Ok so I am pretty sure this goes here and I have heard a few of you guys have had these transmissions so here it goes.
My neighbor whom has helped us out big time has a 1998 Chevy 5.7L K2500 extended cab 4x4 4L60E truck.
I am helping him fix this truck so that he doesn't have to go buy a brand new one that he really doesn't want. I am also doing it because this is the same transmission in my mom's 2004 GMC Envoy 5.3L XUV 4x4 so I want to learn about it.
He says right now the truck is having a problem of shifting into higher gears. He says he gets up to about 35-40 and the transmission will not shift at all. We have done all the obvious stuff (check fluid and he had the filter changed).
I am thinking it is an electronic problem with the truck.
What do y'all think?
Off topic but we were also curious as to why it has two battery carriers. He is only using one but I didn't think you could get dual battery carriers on these trucks other then in diesels.
BTW: the truck was originally in an accident and was repaired (from what I can see it looks like they did a good job).

Sure it's not a 4L80E? Don't think the 4L60E was used in anything bigger than 1/2 ton.
I'm no GM expert, but my buddy is and he has a couple 2500 series GM trucks. He was having transfer case problems with one of them and this caused no end of shift weirdness. Problems seemed to be related to the 3 speed sensors in the transfer case.
All said, the GM transmissions are supposed to be pretty good. Still happy that I drive Fords.
He told me that he was told their were two transmissions used in 1998 K2500s. The 4L60E and 4L80E. He said that after some research the transmission was the 4L60E.
The 4wheel drive works great on the truck we know this for sure.
It sounds like maybe we should try pulling codes. Problem is last vehicle we tried helping him with had a different hookup then OBDII. Did 98 Chevys have OBDII?
He has no code reader but I have an OBDI and OBDII code readers but I am not sure when Chevy started using OBDII (my mom's envoy is OBDII).

You sayin' there's a Bow Tie version of our own Mr Mark Kowalsky?
There was a ford trans tech there asking ?'s on a 4l60,maybe that was him.
First off I apologize if this is in the wrong section. I just rebuilt the transmission in my 95 Chevrolet 1500. It has the 4l60e with the 305 in front of it. I am somewhat new to the GM transmission but I have built ford trans and I build Allison transmissions for a living. Now my problem is when I go to shift from first, it runs up to about 2500 rpm and I let off the gas it shifts into third. I have perfect 3,4, and rev. It got a full overhaul including solenoids and torque converter. Im really leaning toward a servo or 1-2 accumulator problem. Can anyone give me a hint on where to start with this thing?
Thanks a lot for the help in advance guys.
he did get help & fixed the problem.
got some decent mopar owners/mechanics there also.
Was the oil/filter change before or after the problem started? They have a deep pan and shallow pan and if the shallow pan filter is used with a deep pan it can cause oil starvation. With Dads 99 suburban it only effected third gear, burned up the cluch disks and was throwing a code for clutch slippage. I would definitely pull codes as clutch slippage will be a different code from a electrical problem, the e4l60 didn't impress me for toughness but was surprisingly easy to work on. I didn't have to remove the valve body or pump like they said you do to remove the guts and replace the third gear clutch pack but I will warn you that everything sharp as a razor in there and there will be blood.
