Hi all, here's the problem. When my truck is running and the lights are on, they all pulse. Dash lights, headlights, parking lights, radio light, everything. I can't tell what exactly the issue is. I'm thinking maybe it is the voltage regulator or the whole alternator is going?
One more question if I may, would it be possible to remove the stock VR and upgrade the alternator to a more modern one with an internal VR? If so, is that recommended?
The pulsing in your headlights is often caused by abismaly small wiring in your headlight circuit, and the internal breaker in your headlight switch. A common work around fix is to wire up a relay system for your headlights, and replace your headlight switch. This would be a fantastic time to find all of your grounds in your lighting circuit, clean the contact areas and go back together with some dielectric grease.
I replaced my VR with a nice shiny new one and that did nothing but brighten up my engine bay. My next venture is to add engine/frame and body/frame grounds in hopes of solving the problem. If I have no luck with that I will move on to replacing the switch and cleaning grounds.
