alternator light

I have a 302 in my '64 F100. The generator has been replaced with an alternator (GM type, I'm told). The generator light in the dash stays on all the time. I'm sure the alternator is working but I'm not sure how to wire this bulb so it will go off when it should. Does anyone know how to do this? In my mind I'm seeing a smoking dash if this isn't done right. I went from no lights at all on the truck to all lights working after cleaning sockets and points of ground. I never noticed this until I got all the lights working on it. Now I even have parking lights.

TIA
Gary

Save your self a headache and remove the bulb. Install a voltmeter and you will know what the alternator voltage is operating at.

Mike,
Do I suspect the "voice of experience here"? Sounds like a good idea. Thanks
