And maybe a little bit of a story. Anyways my 92 overheated awhile back and I barely made it home. Figured it was the thermostat so I go get one and go to put it in. Ended up breaking the ECT in two. Seems they aren't bullet proof after all. Before the sensor broke the truck would start right up. Never ran it too long for lack of antifreeze. Long enough to get it in my shop . Got it all back together except the broken ECT. Now when I tried to start it, it stumbles and never really catches. Doesn't start at all. Is the broken sensor doing that? The plastic part of the sensor that hooks to the harness is just kinda hangin' there. I guess does the PCM need that input to let it start. I would like to get the old girl out of my shop soon so I can work on the 48. Any and all help would be most excellent.
did you pull codes? the ect shouldnt keep it from running, but its cheap enough and easy enough to fix that you misewell replace it. you know its broke, its not like youd be throwing money at it for no reason. . .do that, see if it runs, and pull codes
Yeah, that's weird...12 hours. I didn't pull any codes cuz no check engine light. Read in my manual that the sensor helps control fuel/air during start up when cold. They are only 23 bucks at Napa. And you're right about throwing parts at it. It used to be my DD and was thinking of giving it to my son. I'm going to town today and will pick one up. Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
the computer will still hold codes in the memory, and not throw a CEL. worth checking out, also there are codes that cant get thrown with KOEO test, only KOER test...just a side note.
typically if these trucks don't get the info they need, i.e. the signal from a sensor, it just runs the way it was programmed to run (computer goes into open loop). itll run poorly, but still run. the ect should be no different, but im interested to see what you come up with.

The PCM relies on accurate ECT feedback for all operating conditions, not just cold/start-up.
The ECT will cause the engine to do that as the PCM will think it a hot engine when it is cold.
Others have had problems starting the engine with a bad ECT sensor.
Well I got a new ECT from O'reallys and just popped it in. It lives again. Fired right up. The part was 5 bucks cheaper too. Now I can get back to work on some other things like the car and my two other trucks. Thanks for the input guys and have a safe and Merry Christmas.
