Honestly Id rather work on a carb. I enjoy that more than messing with wires to get the truck to run right. Whats the point of working on your truck if you hate it? I'm making it so I love it more... I'll have to look for that app cause its gonna be a while till I finish that other motor since I don't have enough money to finish it right now and most of my money comes from doing hay in the summer. So the efi will be in it for a while
Torque is the app. Then you need a bluetooth obd2 reader. You can get them on ebay for $20 or so. I have the app and it works great. It's for 96 and up vehicles.
The EEC-IV (eek 4) is really simple to learn. I would suggest learning about efi because it's not going away and you can do some really cool stuff with it. As was said, you can jump two terminals under the hood and the check engine light will blink out codes. I use my cell phone to take a video do I can replay it to get it right.
Carbs are fine, but efi and an electronic over drive trans will give better mileage. Efi can also adapt to power adders and adding things like turbos and superchargers is much easier. Take a look at the Fox body mustangs for ideas.
You're only 15, so it's very likely you'll have to deal with an efi vehicle. This is an easy one to learn the basics. Since its going to stay efi for a little, use that time to learn. Then swap the carb on and you'll see the differences.

Like I said, I'm not trying to change your mind. If you want to put a carb in it that's up to you. I sold a brand new '08 truck to get an '02, and I sold that to get my '97 because I didn't like the newer trucks and I wanted a truck I enjoyed driving. So I totally get "downgrading" in everyone else's eyes to get something you want.
And from what I understand the smart phone app only works with the OBD2 and newer. If your current system is '87, then it's EEC-IV so the smart phone app won't work. But those are the ones you can read by jumping a connector to ground, so you still don't need to buy a reader.

I'll have to try jumping some codes soon. And I work on other people's cars to so I have to learn about efi sooner or later and u do know some of the stuff for it

I do deal with efi vehicles somewhat. I fix other people's cars and know very little about it but I would rather have a carb on the is truck. I feel like there's less wires and stuff to break with a carb and I do some offroading with this and I don't want it all to just stop cause I got water in something electronic
don't run solids...too much stress on components over long periods of time. I've torn a bunch of brand new oem engine mounts from 4wheeling. if you are driving on the street, oem is all youll ever need. if you want to dish out the money for these poly's, they'll likely be the last ones youll buy.
if you do some nasty 4wheeling, theyre the only way to go.

enjoy being 15
I enjoy every day of it. And I know for sure that I wont be using stock rubber mounts. Those other poly mounts look real good. I'll read some reviews on them. Do you run these?

yep. you can build the same thing with a spring bushing and some fab work...in essence that's all they are. i think i paid 85 bucks from a different site IIRC, but these are the same ones im runnin. its the most common poly design and they take a beating.
i didn't want to buy them at first, but i spent more tearing factory mounts than i would have just buying them in the first place....

Does your truck shake at all at idle? Or just the motor?
get enough cam and itll shake. like i said, mine idles too smooth to feel it at idle. that includes if i were to put solids in it....still wouldn't shake me to death, and likely wouldn't give you the shake you are lookin for. need a cam with 110ish* lobe separation or less if you want to get it shakin, which it will do with stock or poly mounts.
the shake you desire is more about the cam, and less about the mounts. put solid mounts out of your mind...they aren't a viable option if you want the rest of the truck to survive. vibrations and shake are two different things....solids will give you vibration, cam will give you shake. if stock mounts are "5" on the solid scale, and solid mounts were "10" on the solid scale....polys would be "8.5ish". theyre very stout.

I probably will go with poly mounts just cause I want my truck to last and not vibrate
