I was driving down the interste today for about 60 miles. Ran perfectly. Plenty of power, no dummy lights? No check engine lights, nothing. I get off the off ramp and as I slow down for traffic it starts to sputter a bit like it's running out of fuel. As the truck slows down the truck shuts down. As I coasted to a stop I put it in park and tried starting it and it seems like it's locked up tight. I checked the batteries, coolant level, oil, starter. I took the belt off thinking it could've been the ac compressor seized up or water pump etc. tried starting it and same thing. Everything that I could visually check seems to be perfect. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?
one last thing to check take out the glow plugs and try to start it to make sure its not hydro-locked. if it was could be bad news for a few things #1 why did it happen.. I have no clue under those conditons. #2 dmage could have been done due to the presures of that straining the system.
I wish I had more answers for ya hopefully someone will chime in
but try the removing glow plugs and keep anyone's face away from engine compartment when you try to start high pressure spray if it was hydro-locked.
When you do pull the glow plugs and crank it over stand
well clear of the holes. It will spray out if there is any thing
in there to spray out. Better off using a remote switch to
crank it over so you know that your clear.
Just like the airless paint spray rigs that can push paint under
the skin. Or worse yet getting in the eyes. Bad injury can happen.
What kind of voltage do you have in your batteries? If an alternator goes out the truck will run until you use up the juice then nothing. I would start checking wiring from the batteries and down to the starter as well to make all is well. Check all your grounds as well. If it hydro locked you should have been seeing smoke or something. Have you had any smoke on startups that you have noticed?

The voltage on my batteries as of last night were 12.5 which seems in good range to start the engine. All grounds are good. As far as smoke on start up I haven't noticed any but that doesn't mean there wasn't any

We are pulling the glow plugs today to see how full the cylinders are. Unfortunately my oil smells like diesel but it isn't over full. We did a koeo test last night and it seemed like everything was in range but I did have a #8 injection fault. Did a buzz test on the injectors and they are all turning on so I'm wondering if that is the injector leaking
That sucks, I would run a compression test on the other cylinders, if the cylinder bore isn't damaged you may be able to just replace the one piston.
Ya I just worry about going through the hassle of replacing one piston and trying to get all the metal out of the pan for it to happen somewhere else at a later date. Thinking it may be better solution to put another engine in. Catch 22

Agreed. But that is certainly an option if money is tight.
You don't have to pull the engine to replace a piston. I did a hone job and piston on the #2 hole a while back. Removing the oil squirter and reinstalling can be a pain.
