I have an 01 Excursion with the v10, and it ticks just slightly on acceleration. I can hear it in the cab. Not so much a clear tick as just the general impression of a tick if you know what I mean?
I just changed the spark plugs, and they were all torqued to 200 inch lbs, so slightly above spec, I doubt that I have any loose and about to blow because of this.
So, what's going on? I am inclined to think it's just normal engine sound, but I want to be sure.
I think the Banks and Headmans are about it. One of the Excursion guys has been having issues with the headmans though. The welds broke and the ball flanges failed.
Best is going to be the Banks. Thorleys are very good as well and can be had for about 1/2 the Banks. Hedmans would be my third choice just because they are a little longer than shorties, kind of a mid length and come with a Y pipe. Quality has been an issue however. Very disappointed in Hedman for not building a heavy duty header like everyone else, but for $358 I can make them work. Hedman also has them coated but for the money get the Throleys. The "shortie" manifold replacements are good and there are some quality stuff, JBA for example. The problem I have with them is no Y so you would have to fab one or do the Y pipe mod and they are just as pricey as the Thorleys.
Looks like you got plenty of input. I was going to say I have the same problem when it's cold, but goes away when it warms up. I'm pretty sure it's some broken exhaust studs since I have one nut on mine that just spins if you try to tighten it. I really need to do mine, but I'm not looking forward to that project.
