Hi. I've been lurking for about a year and finally found a reason to make my first post.
I just bought a 2002 F350 SRW, V10 4x4 Crew with 49,000 miles. I got a steal on a mint condition truck, but after a few days, I have noticed a "tick-tick" sound for the first minute or so after the engine is running. After it's warm, it goes away. I inspected the manifold and don't see anything obvious.
We bought this truck to pull our camper, and I don't want to get stranded 1,000 miles from home. I don't think it's a serious problem, but I have read a few posts here that make it sound like a problem.
Sounds like a small leak somewhere on the the exhaust manifolds. It's probably to small to detect visually. I'm not a mechanic by any means but from all the posts I've read here that's my guess.
For your year V10 quite possibly the ticking is air leakage around a spark plug that has vibrated loose. When they become loose enough they can blow out, taking some/ all of the threads with them. Not a fun experience, especially because its so easily avoidable...
And yes, it could also be broken exhaust manifold bolts. The new ones are stainless.
Exhaust!!!!! If it's only when first started cold and only for no more that 1 minute V10 probably RH manifold Rear lower corner... Better to fix it when it first acts up then to let it go until the bolt breaks off and warps the manifold. 5.4 V8 manifold $165.00 6.9 V10 manifold $950.00..... Gaskets and bolts $85.00... Same amount of time to do the job just cheaper.... Look into it... Good luck..
