Looking at Expys or Navis between 03-06. Not a lot out there right now but have been seeing some clean looking 03/04 Navigators with similar milleage and pricing to the 03-04 Expeditions.
From what I can determine these trucks are the same aside from some luxury options.
Main downside to the Navigators that I can see is they are all Air Suspension equipped.
Aside from that are there any downsides vs the Expys MPG or reliability wise?
Also is there a significant difference between 03 and 06 Expys?
I understand the tranny is 6 speed in the 06 vs 4 speed in 03. Did this make a significant difference in MPG and reliability? Which would you choose?
Is the V superior or is there not much difference?
Just read that Navigators require premium gas, if so that would disqualify them. Also read that Navigators have the 3 V engine.
Lol I was half asleep and just read what I posted..."is the V superior.."
What I meant to say is do folks find the 2v engines preferrable to the 3v? I understand the concept is more efficiency just as the 6 speed tranny is supposed to be better then the 4 speed. Some people, claim the 6 speed is always searching for a gear and prefer the 4 speed.
Hence why I was asking which do folks prefer and how they do in terms of reliability.
I think 2003 was the last year for the DOHC 32-valver "Hot Rod Lincoln" engine in the Navigator. Its got a knock sensor so runs fine on 87 octane, but has a tiny bit more poop top end with 91 octane if your the type that needs every last pony.
Hey guys thanks for the info. Ended up picking up an 03 5.4 L Eddie Bauer with about 160k on it.
Truck runs great for the age so far. Went on a 900 mile trip and got about 17 miles per gallon on the hywy in -18 temps. Rockers are rusted and going to need the air in the back fixed as I hear some knocking back there when I turn it on.
The earlier facelifted 03/04 trucks shared frames but the drivelines were different. Expy had the choice of a 4.6L or 5.4L 2V PI motor vs the 5.4L 4V in the Navi. Difference in the 5.4Ls was appx 40hp. 260 for the Expy, 300 for the Navi. Transmissions were different too. 4R70w for the Expy, 4R100 for the Navi. In 05 they both went to the same 3V motor, the Expy kept an updated 4R70 while the Navi got a 6 speed Jaguar trans. Obviously the interiors were different. I was ALL about getting a Navi over an Expy but when I finally went to buy, I could not justify $16-$17k for a nice used Navi vs $12k for a nice used Eddie Bauer Expy.
Picked up said 2003 Expedition Eddie Bauer with 78k on the clock in 2011 for $14k out the door and it had every option except the rear TV and nav. Both of which sucked in 03 so I don't really consider them options. Oh, and the air suspension, which is also something I'd rather not have. Had the tow package which was one of the main things I wanted.
Good thread. Sounds like the rear actuator is useless. As long as air gets back there I dont care if its via the floor or roof vents. Ill probably just disconnect it.
In other news just went out to start the expy and its dead. The power locks dont even work so I assume its the battery which looks old. Have not had time to boost it and see if it starts. Its been very cold here the last couple of days and the truck has been sitting for a few days.
I hear these trucks can eat batteries if you dont replace a certain wire?
I haven't had a problem, if they're anything like other Ford vehicles the main grounding strap from the driver's side mount to the chassis can get boogered. I've replaced those straps on other Fords I've had with 4 gauge cables and called it good. Probably should check out the main ground on mine too...
But if there is some other wiring issue I'd like to know about it so I can head that off too, I just replaced my battery but its at least 4 years old and the truck had been sitting for 3 weeks while I waited on parts and was not wanting to charge back up even overnight on a tender.
As far as the rear actuator, every time I've replaced the one that moves the air from the floor to the roof its broken. It will stick in one position or the other manually though, even with no actuator back there at all, you just take the old actuator apart and use the plastic gear post to move it to where you want it and leave it. Mine is permanently set to the top vents because, IMO, the air out of the bottom vents is not nearly as effective as warm or cool air blowing directly on whoever is back there. Oddly enough, I replaced the blend door actuator for the temperature a few years back with a Dorman and its been fine.
