What is the cost difference between the 6 speed and the auto, and with an identical truck how much is the mileage difference. Let's say the truck is an 05 or 06, if that matters.
Most people on here seem to think the mileage is up, I am in agreement, how much I cant say as I havnt had an automatic. The fun factor is definately up though.
I had an 03 and an 04 with automatics and my 06 has the 6 speed manual. I get between 1 to 1.5 MPG better with the manual regardless of load. I only have about 8000 on the truck now.
So if someone is trying to save money it sounds like the 6 speed is the way to go with the difference in initial costs and the slight improvement in mileage, plus the fun factor.
Mustangbru8, One more comment. The torqueshift automatic really does a great job of masking the infamous turbo lag that the 6.0L has. The manual is sluggish until the turbo gets spooled up. Once that happens hang on and enjoy. I found it quite easy to modify my driving style to deal with this sluggishness. Hope this helps. Jim
I don't understand the "fun factor" with the stick either. Guess I'm too old or something. I love my auto........get 18-22 on the highway depending on my driving style and don't have to worry about all that shifting inbetween. Turbo lag doesn't seem to be a problem for me...guess I'm fortunate I have a great tuner. I can understand the mileage being up with a manual because I'm sure there's a little more parasitic loss with the auto, but I don't know if it's enough to make a huge difference.
You'd understand it after you had to shell out several thousand dollars a pop to replace broken autos. I've been there/done that (more than once). As someone that uses his truck primarily to tow a heavy TT with, there is no way I'd go back to an automatic.
I've only blown one auto trans, but that was because I was running the German autobahn at 90 mph with our Chevy Venture minivan for 3 years. I guess it wasn't designed for that type of driving Cost me $4,300 after the VAT tax and Euro conversion rate.

I'm with you Brother! Drove way too many non-syncro'd trannys over the years in busses trucks and cars. Can't imagine a manual if I didn't have to!!
I've never had a 350 in an auto tranny but I couldn't imagine towing anything without my 6-speed. I'm sure those with it like it but I bet that it would take some getting used to if I went to an auto tranny. Long live the 6-speed!
I've used both auto and manual to tow my horse trailer. I go manual all the way. The control of the vehicle is night and day. With the manual the horses have a smoother ride which is a big safety factor for me. But that's just me and I'm one of those old school guys in a young body that grew up driving a manual.
