A/C compressor question

The previous owner took most of the factory A/C components off my 1980 F150, leaving only the evaporator in its location.

I'd like to put it back together and I'm wondering which compressor to use.

The original was a York, but from 82 up they changed to the FS6.

Local junkyards have both units still all there and in the trucks, so I can get any bracket, mount, wire etc.

I'd like to use most, if not all new parts, some are the same for each setup, but some are slightly different for each compressor and the local parts houses charge about the same either way I go.

So my question is this....is the FS6 unit better, as in more efficient and more reliable when changing to the 134R?

Or is the old York better? Honestly I'd like to stay with the York, but if they are unreliable after retrofitting then I'll go with the FS6.

I've done retrofitting/replacement before and have gauges, hoses, and a vacuum pump.

Thanks!

The York in mine (80, dealer air) was retrofitted 5 years back and still works as well as the day it was changed.

I would assume both are about as good as any other...I would go with whichever one is cheaper/easier to grab. The rotary compressor is probably going to be easier to find...and probably a few lbs lighter, if it matters.

I was told by a guy at Vintage Air that the old York piston-style compressors use 12-15 HP while running. But the newest compressors use only 2-3 HP. While the FS6 isn't the latest style it is later than the York and should use less power.

As for reliability, many of both styles are still working well. But the Yorks are built very well and should last at least as long as an FS6.
