Found a tailgate on craigs list!! $100 and in pretty darn good shape. Just a tiny bit of surface rust but overall it's really straight and fit perfectly.
Hopefully I don't get killed on prep and the paint too bad... I'm sure it'll be way less than what i would have spent for a repro or the NOS from national parts depot.
See if you can take the tailgate off, take the latch mechanism out, and somehow pour some paint like rusty metal primer down in the hole and lean the gate from side to side to get some paint down inside the bottom of the gate. They like to rust down there.
You might turn it upside down and try to blow it out first. My 89 gate has a large access panel. I don't know when they started putting that in, but I know a lot of the older tailgates don't have that.
The best way to protect the inside of the gate is Fluid Film. It is a waxy type spray like cosmoline. It comes is rattle cans. It sticks to just about anything(unlike paint), if it gets on rust, it stops it. And it is a once a year treatment.
You can also buy a flexible hose that goes on the can to reach hard to reach places, AKA inside tailgate , doors, fenders, hoods, fenders, crossmembers
