Tailgate bracket / guide.. Remove it?

I realize this is a necro post, but just thought I'd correct some incorrect information for anyone like me searching the forum like everyone advocates doing. I have a 2014 F-350 with no step on the tailgate, and I searched the forums looking to see if I could remove this bracket. It is a theft deterrent, nothing more, as my truck, again, does not have the step but does have the bracket. I am removing it to install a step bumper.

Have to say I like the lights, hitch bumper / step and especially the stickers!
