A guy in the office opposite mine was just telling me about using ATF added to the oil. Said something about the detergent properties in the ATF will really clean out the oil deposits in the engine.

Yes it will. My concern would be the detergent possibly eating the injector orings though.

Does this "guy" run an engine that depends on its lubrication oil to power the injectors under extremely high pressure? Additives in engine oils are controversial enough, for engines that simply use the lube oil as lube oil (like gassers and mechanically-injected diesels). But HEUI engines like ours are not the place to be experimenting with oil additives.

I asked him again, he wasn't sure. I did some googleing and found guys using ATF as a FUEL additive too. Good for sticking lifters, INJ cleaning, and removing deposits and gunk. Said to only run for a short period, or a few hundred miles, and then change the oil and filter. Its mineral oil based, so I'm not sure any harm would come in using it short term. Maybe a diesel mech could give some light. Somebody who has been running with the 7.3 for a long time too, and has done it. Seems like a lot of forums talking about it. Maybe Bill could shed some light on it.
