The Oil-Tite Dorman one the PO put in mine was too long. The gasket would not seal correctly because of this, and it stripped from me trying to get the plug in far enough to seal the gasket. But thankfully didn't harm the pan. Replaced it with a new correct Ford plug and gasket. I put some Permatex Thread Sealant with PTFE on the thread and gasket and it hasn't leaked a drop. Navistar also sells the oil drain plug too. Part# 413441C1
New Ford on left, used Dorman on right. (same style as stripped one)
Or, if you have a dorman one you want to use, get a 1/2-20 tap and tap the oil pan threads all the way through. Make sure to get your chips out, though.
So the Dorman is both too long and an incorrect thread pitch?
How would a longer plug bottom out? I'm not doubting you, I just don't understand the issue.
Idk if the threads stop it, or if its the oil pickup screen above the drain hole too, whatever it is, it doesn't work well with the longer dorman. For the minor price difference, I wouldn't try one again if I had too. the amount of oil its leaked in the last 23k miles is several quarts. Always thought the plug was the oem one, till I did research.
Good to know. Thanks for pointing that out.
The 4 starting threads on the dorman plug looked pretty buggerd. Maybe the PO just tried to crank it in hoping the threads would take.
