adding a deep cycle battery to cargo trailer

I want to get a deep cycle battery so I can leave the lights on in my cargo trailer without running down the truck battery and charge the battery off the alternator. I did some internet searches and see they make wiring harnesses for adding second batteries and they recommend upgrading the alternator but my truck is 2013 and I don't want to start doing stuff like that just yet. The trailer lights are LED and I could put the battery on a charger at home if I had to. I'm also looking at getting a bigger battery so I can power more stuff when I go camping but for that I would use my generator to do a deep charge.

Why not use the battery charging pin on the rv connector on your pickup? If your trailer has a 4 flat connector, just convert it to a rv connector and run a wire for the battery.

What you want to have is called a "BATTERY ISOLATOR", and what it does is prevent the truck battery from directly powering the battery in your trailer if the trailer runs low on juice.

The reason for that is that you don't want to be in a situation where the trailer has ever run your STARTER battery down to the point where you can't start the engine and:
A) Supply new charging energy to the trailer battery

but mainly -

B) You don't want your trailer to draw so much that you CAN'T START YOUR TRUCK

I think those things run less than twenny bucks at any parts store - there are of course more expensive units, be aware of that.

Look at this video ~

What you probably want to do is install it on the trailer, not the truck. It would be simpler - unless you have a lot of trailers
