T-5 speedometer cable

Just installed the T-5 WC in my 54 Ford pick up and I installed the speedometer cable end into the T-5 and not sure if it is going in all the way. It looks like it stops at the seal. Do the gears automatically mesh when installed or do I need to spin the tails haft a little for it to slide in? I am using the same cable I had on my AOD but was told they work on both. It looks like its out about 3/16ths, Does the hold down just keep pressure tight on the seal? Any help would be appreciated.

The gears should mesh but I always like to rotate gears as I mesh them just to ensure proper seating... its not needed normally though. The hold down just applies a light pressure to the cable to keep it from falling out. You shouldn't have to force the cable in (other than the initial "pop" of when the seal clears the housing). I did an AOD to T5 swap and I am 99% sure we kept the stock speedo cable but had to change the gear for the proper calibration (the rear axle was swapped out as well at the time. It was a mustang, but its the same general idea)

Can you snap a picture of the cable? Does the hold down appear to be jammed up and not seated all the way due to the cable?

Mike thanks for the quick reply as far as the hold down its not binding at all. Does the seal go into the housing or does it just seal at the end? It looks like the seal is against the housing so I am thinking it Ok unless the seal goes into the housing.

the seal should slide into the housing if I remember correctly. Are you sure that the seal isn't causing it from sliding all the way in? Sometimes they are pesky and require white lithium grease or AFT to lube it and steady even pressure to get it into the housing. It will pop in if it is new. if it is an old seal they usually are a bit easier to slide in.

The AOD speedo gear has a little bit longer pilot on it than the T5. Here's a pic from somewhere online (googled it) and the AOD gears on in the back row and the T5 gears are in the front row.

AOD Gears Back Row - T5 Gears Front Row

You can shorten the AOD gear so it works in a T5 with a hacksaw, cut-off wheel, or a sharp knife...you can't go the other way.
