Planning on replacing the front P-brake cable on my 87 ranger. Anyone done this? Is the seal at the floorboard part of the cable? The new cable does not have this seal attached. Just to get an idea I started to try this after work the other nite, but could not get the cable to move out of the floorboard where the seal is.
This weekend I will take of the inner fender and get a good pull at it, if I need to , but was just wondering if the seal will go back in with the new cable or if I will now not have a seal at the floor.
I'm guessing that your brake cable setup is the same as mine.
In that case, adjust the cable equalizer to give you some slack in the cables. Disconnect the front cable at its connection with the intermediate cable. Working inside the cab, disconnect the cable from the control unit. Attach a fish wire to the end of the cable under the cab. Pull the cable out from inside the cab. The cable should pull through the grommet. Attach the new cable to the fish wire (attach the wire to the end that will connect to the intermediate cable). Working under the cab, pull the fish wire and cable through the grommet. Connect the control end of the cable to the control unit. Connect the other end of the cable to the intermediate cable. Adjust to remove the slack.
This is a summary from the Ranger factory service manual. Hope your cable setup is the same and can use these directions.
Thanks, I also have the factory manual (for an 87 - my year) but mine didn't say that the cable would pull out of the grommet. It did say to install the cable from the cab side outward, but there is so little to grab hold of in the cab I was thinking I would pull it out through the firewall to the outside instead of into the cab. Guess I will try from the inside
