I'm close to installing the speedometer cable on my 53 f100. I noticed that there is a groove on the shaft of the gear that fits into the transmission. I am wondering if some sort of seal was intended to fit in this groove so 90 weight didn't get into the speedometer cable and graphite cable lube leak into the transmission. Any thoughts?
My recollection is that there is an O-ring or seal in the groove. The spiral grooves take lube up into the bushing the driven gear rides in. Then again, I recall having to hold the driven gear in the "adaptor" to prevent it falling into the tailhousing. I guess if you install it as-is and it stats leaking, you'll know. I don't see anything shown in the parts manual.

As this 1956 pic shows: The 17298 O-Ring is located on the speedometer cable, not on the gear.

Bill, not to highjack this thread, but do you have a picture and or a part number for the gasket or seal that went in the whole where the e-brake came through the floor like on my 55 F350. Part of it was still there and i pulled it out hoping I could make one out of some sort foam. The material is very soft and pliable and has split in it so part of it went below the floor and part above the floor but under the mat.
Thank-you, I put this question here since I know other guys are interested rather than a pm.

Look at this pic for 2652 to see if this is what you want. If so...
B3TZ-2652-A .. Grommet-Parking Brake Lever to Floor Board / Obsolete
No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any,
I don't see it in DC's catalog, maybe Mid 50's has it.

Thanks Bill.
Yes, that is probably it but I thought it was larger in diameter. Perhaps the diagram is deceiving.
Too bad no dealer has any. I have not found it in any catalog. Mid Fifty does not have it. Harrier Joe and I have talked about making one from some foam rubber. I guess I'll have to. Then I can mass produce and sell them and get rich!

1957/60 is different than 1953/56 (B3TZ-2652-A). Dunno if it'll work or not, but there's 1 available NOS

Here's a pic of the little charmer. Looks kinda familiar, doncha think?
The diagrams are identical aren't they? Thanks!
I just went out and pulled what's left of my gasket/ grommet off and measured the hole. The hole in the floor board for the e-brake is 3 1/2" x 1 3/8". Pics from my phone in next post.
Here are the pictures of the gasket/grommet left from my 55 F350. It looks like the engine and road heat melted it. The first pic shows how it is cleaved so part goes above and part below the floorboard. It looks bigger than the one in the diagram....
