I don't recommend Chrysler ATF4 for your C6

As I understand it, the fluids are the same, it's the additives (friction modifiers) that are different between formulations.

I would start with a complete flush and fill of the transmission and torque converter (if I'm understanding your problem correctly).

You probably are the basic issue is 1st gear slipping. And so you recommend a trans flush with the correct fluid to fix the slip?

Transmission AND torque converter - most of the fluid is contained in the TC and just draining the transmission will get you less than half.

I asked a good tranny guy to stop by and offer his 2¢.

I second the full flush and installing the proper fluid. I don't know what ATF4 will do to a C6, but I suspect it isn't good for it.

Thanks for the help yall and I'll let you know how that works once I finish my 93 mustang I'm doing so I have time to do more to the truck. This forum seems to have very helpful and polite people I'm glad I picked this one for assistance with repairing and restoring my truck

I think someone may have swapped my trans at some point because judging by the pan alone I believe I have a c6 trans did any 81 f100 come with a c6? And is the tailshaft housing on a c4 longer by an inch or two?

So I drained the pan and torque converter changed the modulator refilled with lucas trans fix and 13 quarts 8 oz of type f fluid warmed her up and she still slips in first if you don't baby her don't know if it takes time to get better because of lucas or not. Also found out my oil pressure gauge is non working and the motor has a intermittent miss I can't seem to get rid of and I need a new gas tank productive day I love my new truck.

It could take a while to take effect. The old additive will be in the clutch lining, and if there is any issue with the seals it will take a while for them to swell. I'd not expect it to take full effect for 500 miles.

Oh, should have said the test for the oil pressure gauge is to ground the wire at the sender. The gauge should peg slowly with the key on.

OK perfect thanks y'all should've thought of that. This thing is a definite project truck but for some reason with every problem I love it a little bit more.

These trucks are onions and we peel them one problem at a time. Pretty soon they are reliable again. Recently got Rusty there, but he's not perfect- just reliable. The HVAC controls need some work, but only in the winter.

The trans dipstick on the truck must be the wrong one. I put in a total of 14 quarts after a full drain and it is showing above the arrows. My oil pan dipstick is wrong as well. I'm not quite sure what of my engine or trans is original anymore
