I just bought an F3, 1952, with a V8 flathead motor. the gearbox is very hard to operate, changing up is ok, but changing down is a real effort. I live in NJ, just outside Philadelphia to the north on the banks of the Delaware. It would be great to hang out or meet somone who might be able to tell me if I need to get the gearbox worked on or if this is how they work. I would also like to find someone who can do some of the heavier work as I do not have facilities. Thanks

Second, insert your location in the upper right hand corner of your post, just below where the date and post number is located. You do this through the control panel you used to sign up for the board. It comes in real handy to know when you're located if you are searching for help or parts. If someone is local that person is more inclined to lend a hand.
As for your transmission, you have what is commonly referred to as a "crash box". It's a non-synchronized tranny. You will need to double clutch to make it shift smoothly from one gear to the next. Upshifting takes a little practice, downshifting is somewhat of an art. Id did a little write up on how to downshift a non-synchronized transmission:
I've been driving mine for over 30 years and still grind them once in a while, especially at the beginning of the driving season in the spring. It doesn't take took long to get back in the groove.
