Well after 9 months working on my truck a took advantage of the good weather and decided to take it for a short drive only to discover the 4 speed top loader gearbox with PTO facility sounds like a crunchy box of sloppy cogs. All OK in top gear but very difficult to select anything else with out crunching. I'd be very interested if anyone knows if a more modern type of gearbox could be mated to the original flathead V8 preferably automatic . Unfortunately for me I reside in the UK and sourcing parts here if extremely expensive with shipping and tax has to be paid but wondering if Volvo parts could work as they are popular in both countries . Thanks for your help.

Once you have the hang of it it will shift just fine up and down, time your RPMs(listen) with each shift and double clutch. Also check to make sure that you have enough fluid in the transmission.
An earlier post by me mentioned me removing really thick oil from the box, and it's now back in and things are much better especially when double clutching. Thanks for your help.
Double clutching when up shifting means let the clutch out in neutral, push the clutch back in, then shift into the next higher gear. When downshifting shift into neutral, let the clutch out and rev up the engine to the rpm that the engine would be turning if you were in the lower gear at that speed, then push in the clutch and down shift.
