Good morning All, i am looking for preventive mantenance that should be done to 4 wheel drive systems. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer, 4 wheel drive. What needs to be done to maintain it. i dont have any issues i am aware of right now. My truck just trurned over 160k miles. Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
Use it or lose it. Assuming you have a 2-speed transfer case, you should put it in 4 Low at least a couple times per year. Read your owner's manual on limitations/procedure for 4 Low.
If you haven't changed the transfer case fluid in 160k miles, you're long overdue.
Find the vent lines for transfer case, front and rear differentials and make sure they're not plugged up with mud or other stuff.
Speaking of differentials, the differential lube should be changed if it hasn't been done recently. The factory interval is usually around 100k but certain conditions warrant changing sooner (towing, immersion in water, etc.). I use 60k. Use whatever you want but don't exceed the factory recommendations. Note that some conditions like water immersion require changing regardless of how long it's been since the last change.
Make sure your CV boots aren't torn.
These are things that come immediately to mind. I'm sure others will contribute the things I've missed.
