My 03 SD is a third vehicle and is used primarily for towing and will only typically get 5K miles a year. A few years ago I replaced rotors and pads with OE from local Ford dealer. While towing 12K travel trailer brake power was weak to say the least, checked trailer brakes and controller everything seemed fine there, just poor overall braking. I purchased another set of OE pads and removed tire to replace, when I checked the rotor I was a bit surprised. The front of the rotor is smooth but the back has chunks missing. Pitted I suppose could be used to describe as well. Can someone comment on what this could be? Is it corrosive rust, heat or something else? I live in Utah and we like to salt our roads.
thanks!
I used to work in a brake shop, and I've never seen anything like that.
It looks like a defective rotor though. If you bought it from Ford, I would take it back and insist they replace it. There is no possible way for that to happen to a rotor during normal or even extreme usage.
I have seen rear rotors like that.. My02 Avalanche 3/4 ton truck had rear rotors that were flaking / almost like delaminating and pitting like what your rotors look like. It had only 38k miles on it..
Thanks for the reply's. One of the weirdest things I've seen for sure.
Big-foot, did you ever figure out what caused it on your Avalanche?
Because I will be tearing it apart and replacing the rotors and pads, this gives me a chance to upgrade. I have heard the slotted rotors and Hawk pads are great for stopping especially while towing, is this just hot air or is it valid? anything is better than current situation

GM never did a recall on them, but they did have a service advisory... The forums were going nuts with it back in 2005/6 or so.. Pretty sure it was a supplier quality issue as it never reoccurred with the OEM style Brembo rotors I put on the truck along with new pads..
I see it all of the time on various cars and trucks that come into my garage. My own truck does it as well/ Just put new front rotors and pads on tonight, still have to do the rears. I had powerslot rotors on the front and it took almost ten years for them to rust on me. i would have used them again, but $$$ is a factor for me at the moment. My truck only has 60K miles on it now and I am now on my third set of front rotors, and about to be on my 4th set of rears.
