Engine makes this horrible sound

I have a 96 F150 straight 6, manual trans 4X4. When I have it on cruise control and go down a hill, the engine makes this horrible noise - like a bad exhaust leak. it doesn't leak, of course, it only makes the sound when the engine isn't providing any power (like going down a hill with cruise control). Is this normal or anything I should worry about?

PS - The engine sounds and runs great all other times - just this loud exhaust-leak-sounding noise at times.

Sure it's not in the trans. I can't hear the noise but figured I'd ask.
That's a tricky one. Back to first page for more help.

Definitely not the trans. It's from the engine - like the force from the momentum of the truck is now pushing the engine, instead of the other way around.

Do you have stock exhaust on this or is it custom? Stock muffler or custom? The reason being is that the stock exhaust is engineered to keep back pressure in the system. If it has custom exhaust and or muffler the back pressure has probably been dropped and the exhaust is back sucking, or maybe the inside of your stock muffler is shot. I'm just guessing of course without being able to hear the noise myself.

Stock muffler and exhaust. Nothing fancy!
