Unusually loud engine

I have a 68 f100 with a 360 and every time I turn it over its very loud. I don't know if these engines are supposed to be this loud but I've gotten complaints from local people saying its too loud. Now my exhaust system isn't all the way through to the back and that might be it but the engine its self sounds loud. Any ideas of what it could be?

Is this truck originally from the Bronx or maybe Brooklyn?

I don't know what you mean by "loud". Starter? Grinding flywheel?

Considering the only sound deadening these trucks have is sheetmetal, over all the engine AND exhaust is gonna be loud, especially exhaust with no or a crappie muffler, assuming the engine is running right. Id look at your exhaust and make sure it's all hooked up and not cut off somewhere "straight piped". But for engine noise other than exhaust problems it won't get any quieter

If your exhaust is hooked up with a good QUIET muffler, tell your annoying neighbors to shove it.

Yeah, what's loud?

A Harley-Davidson bike is loud. It's supposed to be.

Freight trains are loud. They're supposed to be.

Race cars are loud. They're supposed to be.

A Boeing 747 taking off is loud. It's supposed to be.

An asphalt milling machine , a nuclear explosion, an earthquake, a sonic boom, a Motorhead concert, a cement mixer crashing through a dynamite plant....

What's loud???

Do some investigating. It will never be as quiet as a new hybrid. But even my truck with a hot motor and big dual exhaust pipes can run through the neighborhood at night without disturbing anyone. It idles kinda quiet actually....

With the right muffler, these FE's are as quiet as any V8.

Might want to check your manifold gaskets or the connections where the y-pipe meets your manifolds.

Sounds like it's got some exhaust work done. Or needs some done.

Do a visual check on the system. From cylinder head to tail pipe.

Exhaust leak for sure. Maybe at the exhaust gasket? I could see red flames through the missing gasket spots at night, on my 69 F350.
