I have an interesting engine noise I'd like some opinions on. I originally thought the muffler might have been some of the cause (small case, too much back pressure) but after changing that, I still have the noise.
It starts about 2400 RPM's and sounds like lifter rattle, but since this engine doesn't have lifters.........
It quits about 2900 RPM's and the engine sounds fine after that, but that's my pulling/acceleration range. It almost sounds like pinging or detonation which I suppose is a possibility as I'm running the limp wristed California excuse for gasoline. Should I up the octane just to see if it makes a difference?
It's a 2000 SD, CC. No headers, it looks like it had the better (earlier) Y pipe, stock exhaust except for the muffler which was a smaller Spintech but is now a Flowmaster Series 70 Big Block (LOVE it buy the way).
Check the bellhousing cover and exhaust heat shields. I'm currently fighting that damn bellhousing cover noise AGAIN. (it's not really the cover, it's the separator plate above it)

If you have the 99' style y-pipe it is probably flutter. Sometime during the 00' MY Ford went to later style y-pipe which necks down to 1.5" at 2 places to get rid of the flutter. That design got rid of the flutter but also added a big restriction point to the exhaust system. It is my opinion that the stock manifolds are the root cause of the "flutter". Going to headers seems to get rid of it.
but since this engine doesn't have lifters.........
No lifters, but it DOES have hydraulic lash adjusters, which can make a similar "rattle" sound like bad or bleeding down lifters do.
I'm with the others though...you most likely have a loose metal shield of some sort.
