What kinda boat prop should i buy. I've got a 93 19' baja with a merc 4.3 and an OMC lower unit. First boat so i'm not sure what to get, the prop is all banged up but the boat is in beautiful shape.
Props are available in different diameters, blade pitches and number of blades as well being made from stainless steel, aluminum and composite materials. All affect how your boat will perform. It is always better to talk with someone at a dealer to set you up with the correct propeller.
Some are good for hole shots others for top end speed and still others for pulling power.
With the wrong prop you will never reach the motors recommended RPM and going the other way, you could over rev and risk blowing your motor.
Some dealers will even loan you different props to try before you purchase. All of them will need to know your intended use as well as type and weight of boat and motor specs.
Check at the local marina. They can probably recomend a place that will fix your current prop with a fairly fast turnaround time.
They can generally rebuild a prop, no matter how badly mangled it is for much less than a new one. they can also change the pitch of your current prop if you require.
One method of selecting a prop is that you run at wide open throttle and select a prop that keeps your RPM in the specifed range (4400-4800 RPM for a merc 4.3)
Merc engine and OMC lower unit? I've never heard of that combo. Is this some sort of frankensteiin power unit?
I also reccomend getting your current one refinished, much, much cheaper, and looks like brand new when done.
Any boat place will know of a place to get it refinished, or be able to get it fixed up for you.
If you are curious about what type of prop you have, just take the nut, washer, etc, and cotter key off the shaft. When you pull the prop off, on one end of it there should be some markings, numbers and letters, right close to where the prop fastens to the shaft.
That will give you the pitch and size of your current prop.
Just make sure that when you put the prop back on, that you get your self a new stainless cotter key. Regular ones will rust out and leave your prop at the bottom of the lake.
Oh yeah also put the prop on the same way it came off, or you end up going backwards!
