question for someone with a bass boat

I am looking into buying my first boat and have a question: I was tought to run the motor "unlocked". My new boat will more than likely come with power tilt/trim standard. When using this setup, do I have a choice on whether the motor is locked or unlocked?

Thanks for your help. I would ask the local boat dealer, but I'm afraid the next time I go they won't let me leave without having something hooked to my trailer hitch...

With power trim you can not "unlock" the motor. In essence the trim is a movable trim pin like on the small outboards. There is a release mechanism that will allow the motor to pop up if you strike something. It is not good to do so, you will need to be a little more careful.

Not sure if all models of power trim come with the unlock feature, and I'm not sure of how much aof a novice you are to boating, but the part to be careful about when unlocking the engine is to remember it's unlocked before you try to use reverse. Many times it's when one needs reverse fast (to avoid hitting a dock, to avoid grounding, etc.) that the rest of us in the vicinity hear the prop pop out of thw ater and the engine freely rev. 'Course I've forgot about it a good number of times myself...

Thanks for the input guys...
I'm use to having the motor unlocked. Almost everywhere we take the boat there are many submerged stumps and tree trunks that boaters inevitably strike. So far, my father and I have not had any serious damage to our outboard, but we've always had the motor unlocked. I've seen dozens of boats with i/o engines being pulled out with broken props and many more with broken/bent skegs.
Most of those people were not familiar with the lake and didn't know where they could run at full speed and where they should use shallow water drive to reduce the chances of striking the underwater hazards.
