I had mine melt down when the start relay or solenoid stuck on... Although I did have some fancy wiring and diodes for the efi I have... In my case, the diodes failed causing a short condition to ground and the resistor wire melted down. Not enough to destroy the other wires or melt the insulation. Luck was with me.
Might have been the wasted spark coil I was running as well was drawing too much power, so I went with a straight wire and installed a cheapy spade fuse holder from a stereo headunit install kit.
That wire worries me, as if it ever fails and melts, it might cause a serious fire hazard. If it ever gives you trouble, I'd go with a ballast resistor ceramic block thing and bolt it under the hood somewhere and install a fuse to protect the circuit.
Thanks Zark-eh,
I am chasing an electrical gremlin that is intermittent. I have started to run out of ideas about what is going on. I ran a new hot wire from the ignition switch to the coil, now, wondering about the resistor wire, going to replace.
