Hi folks - first time poster. I was given this truck by an older friend who isn't driving anymore and this is my first repair on this truck. I recently loaned it out and it was returned with a problem with the ignition switch. The ignition switch turns freely to the start position but does not spring-return to run and does not start (or show signs of power on the dash in the start or run key position). Being a newby, I replaced the ignition switch/tumbler - easy enough. But this did not address the issue and apparently the fix lies somewhere beyond. I see the starter rod actuating when i turn the key but there is no resistance when i turn the key to the start position and it doesn't appear that whatever return spring or return mechanism is functioning. Any thoughts based on what I have described? I'm about to pull the turn signal assembly and venture deeper but thought i'd post first to see what info I might be able to obtain from friendly experts. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
There is a pot metal piece in the steering column that breaks (apparently because people use the steering wheel to climb inside and put a lot of weight on it) that *could* be your issue; this piece connects the key tumbler to the rod running down the column to the switch (which is on top of the column behind the dash, below the speedometer/tachometer area).
Thanks for the response, CTU. It definitely feels like something in the mechanical linkage upstream of the switch. Would a break in the pot metal piece account for the lack of power to the dash lights when the key tumbler is turned to the run position?
Thanks a bunch, Chris! I'm going to look at the switch and see if the ignition rod is actuating into it. While open, i'm just going to replace the switch regardless. But if the ignition rod doesn't slide i'll work between the rod and tumbler to see if I can figure it out. I'm taking this approach since i'm a newby at taking apart the column below the turn signal switch and want to bookend the issue, if I can.
