The end broke off of my heater control cable a few years ago and i kind of want to get it working again as the heat kind of sucks with it only on defrost. I went into ford and they are no longer available. Just was wondering how hard they are to take apart and replace? Are all '80-'86 trucks the same? Can you get them somewhere else?
Yeah, 80-86 would all use the same cable, but you'd have to get it from one without a/c as those with it use vacuum instead of a cable. Are you sure they're not available? I got a new temperature control cable from Ford just a year and a half or so ago.
You can switch it off of defrost moving the cable manually at the other end (not behind the switch) under the dash.
The cables should be the same as long as no A/C. I agree with the above. I would think that Ford or another parts store would have it or at least access to it. If not though, try the junk yards. They will have the years you are looking for and a lot cheaper too. Good Luck, Bryan
On the non-a/c trucks the cable that operates the heater/defrost functions goes from the dash selection levers to a lever arm just behind the glove box that controls where the air flow goes.
While you can see it by looking up under the dash it is easier to work on, and completely remove if necessary, with the glove box removed. Once the cable is off the lever you will be able to see which is binding, the cable or the lever. I was able to free my cable up by completely removing it and then working Pblaster into it while sliding it back and forth. There is a method for adjusting the cable outlined in the Haynes manual.
Good luck and let me know if you need any other info.
