Since I'm pretty short I have my seat all the way up, and I have a toolbox I throw all my stuff in and it fits behind the seat. Could look into that. Another thing I do, is put my fluids (Brake, oil, trans, etc) down in the cab corners.
When I bought the truck it had a shoddy box behind the seat. I think I'm going to make a better version of that. Something with dividers so things don't slide around.

I would be completely lost without my toolbox. I have a fairly deep version and it's full most of the time.
My truck does have a small storage box inside the engine compartment. It's about the size of a large battery. I'm going to store some things in there too. I just have to be careful about heat I guess. It's way off to the side but I imagine it still gets fairly hot in there.
While what you linked to is a nice item it's not really what I'm looking for. I want something to hold cell phone, wallet, pens, gloves, etc. where I can reach them easily.
I need to do some thinking because I also need to leave room for a brake controller and a CB. It's a while down the road but I also need to leave room for toggle switches for extra lights and rear rocket launchers.
Just an idea [outside the box], most older trucks [1981 may well qualify] have dash pads which have cracked, especially in the area of the mono-speaker. There have been threads written with attempts to restore/repair the pads with mixed success. However, if one [you] is not all about restoring, but rather uses his truck as a truck and the dash has the previously mentioned cracks, then why not find a suitably sized dish [think large ash tray] and trim the speaker opening such that the dish will settle down into the opening. With the correct adhesive, it would stay put and you could use it to store the cell phone, wallet, pens, gloves, etc.

I've recently decided I want to restore it true to form. Otherwise an excellent idea.
