I've posted in the past about my truck having higher coolant temps than most, usually run 198-203. I had never changed my coolant but had changed thermostats with no change. Well had the engine rebuilt at SuperDutyService and on test drive Anthony commented on my high temp which I addressed as normal for my truck. Well upon discussing not really having a need for my coolant filter since I'm now running red coolant (final charge) I decided to just turn my valves off. Well I had a 620 mile drive home and my temps stayed 188-193, 10 degrees difference than having a flowing coolant filter. I know several had posted before about running the higher temps like I was so for those of you that are, do you have a coolant filter? I've ran a filter for almost 3 years, the same length of time I've been monitoring my temps so I had never checked it pre filter? Thoughts???
Changed the thermostat and put the coolant filter on at same time, was running 180-183*, now 190-191* with EOT at 210-211*. Doing a BPD EGR cooler and Ford oil cooler in the spring, probably some other preventive stuff while I'm there
I had changed my t-stat thinking that was the issue but it stayed the same and these are motorcraft t-stats. Also put in another new one that came with the rebuild kit and it didnt change. I was expecting to see 190s since everything was fresh but it still ran 200ish just like normal. Anthony suggested it could possibly be blockage in the radiator but just closing the shut off valves dropped my temps 10 degrees. Dont know the why of it but Anthony saw it was running hotter with his own eyes and hes the one that put the other new tstat in. Closed the valves and ran home and this was within half hour of having high temps. Ran 600 miles straight and had consistant 10 degree lower temps. I know the filter isnt supposed to change the temps but just closing the valves did on mine. Anyone else with a filter wanna do a test drive with the valves closed just to clarify?
So far thats three t-stats that ALL ran 198-203 (normal, would get higher under loads or high external temps like high 90s into the 100s Texas heat) and just closing the valves is the only difference. I might add that for about 5 miles my temps did drop to the high 170s low 180s but it was low 50s outside and the speed limit was 35-45 mph but as soon as I got back up to normal they held consistant.
I always run a bit hotter then most with the tires/gearing/weight of my truck. But I'll close the filter off to see the difference if any just for curiosity. But I see no reason it would run hotter from it...
