Distributor beat down
#16
Well, I got my dizzy back. With it was a hand written card when the advance kicks in etc. He told me how he had to take the advance spring from another dizzy to replace the missing one on mine.
When I got it home I took it apart just to confirm, and d... it only had one spring. I could see where he bent the tab mount to add tension to the existing spring, but the missing spring had not been replaced. He lied. Now I don't know if he even opened it up, or put it on his machine. I know he was in a big hurry. So?? I think I'll visit the j/y and pillage a couple of set of springs.
For me, when a person lies right to my face about work I paid for, that's it. A person is only as good as their word.

Thanks, BVA, I was wondering about that. I'm curious. Why did you go to the Davis dizzy? Was the bushing shot or something?

I bought a remanufactured distributor when I ditched the feedback carb and EEC and had it recurved. The shaft did feel loose even when it was "new." The timing would jump around when the engine revved and wasn't steady at idle - just all around sloppy.
It's ridiculous how easy the Bronco starts with that new distributor. Even cold, just pump the pedal once to set the choke/fast idle cam and it cranks about a second before it lights. On hot starts just tap the key. I put on some fancy plug wires and new plugs with it, but otherwise no changes and the difference was amazing.

I got quite the education on dizzies today. I had a talk with the recurve guy. On the machine mine does not waiver. It comes in at 1200 rpm and tops at 2600. I set it at 14-16* btc, and it pulls 16* more total. He always installs only one spring, and showed me the stop he welded in. It was very interesting.
When I first rebuilt/installed the 300, I was achieving 16mpg highway. I look forward to regaining that or better with the quadrajet and properly functioning dizzy.

Hey F250, how does that MSD 6al box work for your? Idk I bought one a while back never used it still have it in my tool box. Recently went to the junkyard found a stock 300 running a msd 6al box surprised no one had took the box I did take off the 6000 Rev limiter chip just because when. I got mine used he didn't have any to give me.
Still have wondered how it worked for anyone else.

Fordboy300: You will like the MSD.
I am very happy to say that I feel my build is finally back to where it was four years ago. The advance is working correctly and the Quadrajet with its tiny primary bores are working in harmony to produce excellent mpg and performance. Now I will begin the fine tuning by installing the AFR gauge permanently and adjusting from there.
I really like the QJ. Being able to tune the cruise circuit is a wonderful design plus. I haven't done the numbers yet, but can see by the gauge--which means nothing, I know--that mpg has improved.
Also gone are my problems with hot starts that I had with the Summit Carb.
