distributor pickup removal procedure?

hey guys, ive been troubleshooting my timing problem/lack of power for about a week now, ive only seen code 14 in the computer, which leads me to the ignition module, or the distributor pickup coil. the module is fine. so now im replacing the pickup, my only question is with the distributor out, is the eaisest way to replace it by removeing the bottom gear and pressing the shaft out through the top? its def pressed in there as i thought it would come right out once i removed the bottom gear. just chking to see if anyone knows the procedure. thanks for any help!

Yes, you need to pull off the gear and reinstall it afterwards. Just don't break the gear.

got the gear off fine, but the shaft must be pressed into a bearing or something inside the casing, its SUPER tight, so im gonna take it to get pressed out instead of me beatin on it :P

has anyone seen the pickup coil/stator go bad on the 2.9? if so could you tell visually? everything else is brand new from the rotor button to the spark plugs, only thing left is this pickup which does look a little old.

No, it's not pressed in. Just get some carb cleaner and soak it the shaft and housing get varnished up and you have a hard time getting them apart. If you spray the cleaner between the housing and shaft from the bottom and twist and pull it will come apart. Aso, i always replace the stator with the module, I have found the stator gets weak and can ruin a new module in a short amount of time.

I have done this before. My advise is to replace the distributor. I had access to a wide variety of gear pullers and such, and it took a lot of work to pull that apart, and even more work to put it back together. The shaft itself can bend during the process, and the whole shaft is a moving part, and can wear out. A new or rebuilt distributor is well worth the saved headache.
