Synthetic ATF instead of type F

I got a super deal on 16 quarts of Penzoil synthetic ATF. It says it'll work for Mercon and dextron applications. I have a 1977 small block C-6 that I've been saving for 20 years. Dug it out and it says to use type F. What happens if I use the synthetic? Would the syn. be an improvement or is there that much difference that I'll screw my trans? Hate to have to give the stuff away and use the old dino oil.

Take a look at this thread to save me a lot of typing:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...uld-i-use.html

If your C6 was assembled pre- May 1st 1976, and was not rebuilt later on, then you need to use Type F.

From the original Ford trans documentation, printed in all capitals, on a bright yellow background so everyone would see it, was the warning:

"Note: Never install CJ fluid in a transmission designed for Type F. The transmission won't hold together."

Just substitute "Dexron/Mercon" for where it says "CJ fluid", as Dexron/Mercon superseded CJ.

I have no way of telling whether it was built before 5-1-76 but the dipstick says type F so it probably was. I pulled it out of a wrecked school bus in '92 and I'm pretty sure it was never touched. It's a shame I can't use the whiz-bang juice since I got such a good deal and synthetics are superior.
My local NAPA has ATF for $3/qt so I'll get 16? of them. Type F.

I'd check Amazon et al for ATF in the 5 qt containers---typically runs a lot less and there's less plastic to dispose of too.

You might be able to find 1 gallon containers of ATF at Walmart, so no shipping required.

Type F on Amazon isn't that good of a deal from what

Type F on Amazon isn't such a good deal from what I can find. Walmart? Probably filtered through old socks by Chinese slave labor. I'll support my local economy, thanks.

The NAPA sale was for dextron. Type F is $5/qt. Amazon has a brand called True South. It's like half the cost of everybody else and if I get 2 cases then shipping is free. Is anyone familiar with this?

I'm not familiar with that brand but I will remind the "walmart" shoppers Amazon is FREE SHIPPING on most orders over $35.
