ZF6 fluid (Mobil1?)

I have seen in posts here several recommendations for using Mobil1 Synthetic ATF for the 6 speed. I went shopping for it, and all the local stores- Walmart, Pep Boys, Autozone only had Mobil1 synthetic MerconV. The NAPA and Advance also had no synthetic Mercon. The 2000 owners manual says to use a conventional Mercon (not MerconV) and specifically states to not use MerconV or Mercon/MerconV fluids in the automatics that specify Mercon. It states to use synthetic mercon for the ZF5. The dealer wants over $22 a quart for the synthetic Mercon for the ZF5. A local manual trans. rebuilder advised that I use any synthetic ATF whether Mercon or not. I wanted to make sure before I change to MerconV. Any advice?

I've just used the regular stuff every 50k or so with no issues. It still looks clean every change. I'll be due for another change in a couple of months so I'll pass on the $22/qt.

He's right. Any good synthetic ATF will work better than the stock stuff. I use Royal Purple because NAPA stocks it.
