Daughter ran Harriet out of gas today: "Well, I thought I had enough to make it to school, home, and then the gas station...."
Brilliant.
Anyway, now when I put my foot on the gas at a stop it sputters like it's going to die. Idle is fine. Acceleration is fine. Just that first touch of the gas pedal is a problem.
Wondering if maybe when she ran the tank down, some junk in the tank got taken into the fuel line. But if that's so, why would it idle and accelerate fine?
1st check your fuel filter(s) for dirt or crud from the tank to them. Ya know your gonna have to change one (or both if you have 2).
The stumble or hesitation you describe is handled by the accelerator pump. When you crack the throttle there is a sudden ingest of air (and loss of vaccum) going in the engine. This creates a sudden and temporary lean mixture. To compensate for this is the accelerator pump's responsibility. It shoots the correct amount of gas to balance the mixture back out. I don't remember which carb you got now but something is partially or wholey plugged in this curcuit.
