Ok I got my truck running after 5 years of sitting. Ran great when we got it running and drove it around the yard at work. I put 5 gallons of gas in the tank to get it started. After a week or so, when I give it gas it whats to die on me. Also when I do keep giving it gas and rev it up good it some times back fires when I let off the gas. Sometimes it hesitates then revs good then chocks then catches and so on. When I put it in drive and try to give it gas it sometime stalls or hesitates so I cant just give it gas fast or it will die. Like I mentioned before it was running good and had none of these issues but now it does. It idles just fine but when giving gas it wants to cut out or just dies. Could it be not enough gas in the tank, fuel filter or what might be happening?
I had the same problem on mine when I first bought it. It had sat for some time and lack of gas and moisture formed some oxidation inside the tank. Once I put gas in it, the particles inside the tank were loose in the gas. It took a few new fuel filters and the problem went away. It purrs like a tiger now.
I'd check your vaccuum too, you may have some cracks or split lines, or your air filter assembly itself may be split after so long sitting. Mine sat 6 years and wouldn't run with any throttle till I duct taped the hell out of the air cleaner box... I replaced it asap.
I'd say start with re-building the carb, sounds like your accelorator pump is leaking, or one of the old leathery/fiber ones that is drying out and not pumping.
Or, if you can live with it, fill the tank, get a new fuel filter, throw a can of burn through style carb cleaner in the tank and drive it for a while to see if it clears.
My 76 was doing the same thing when i got it, it had set for a while, the carb would self drain if left sit for a day or two-- I'd have to manually prime it to start it, and had lots of hesitation/no accelerator pump response. Meant to get a can of carb cleaner into the tank, but even without it I've drove it on weekends for a couple months living with the hesitation and its gradually gotten better, almost gone now. It was just my carb needing to clean out and loosen up from sitting dry.
If the tank is nearly empty, it's easy as pie to drop it & check inside. If it's rusty as all Hell inside, you'll know you need one. They're cheap. Around $125. For about another $20 you can get a polyethylene tank & never have to worry about it again. I've seen people burn up an engine because the tank was full of rust & causing a severe lean condition.

G.
thats the same deal with my 78, when I first started running it I was keeping a quart jug filled with gas to pour into the carb every time or it wouldn't start. And the more I drive it the better its getting.
I think that is the main problem, I need to put more gas change the filter check the rubber lines to make sure they are not cracked and just run the carb more. 5 years of sitting its amazing the darn thing even started.
DLP I will let everyone know how it turns out. I havent had time to really work on it so maybe in another week. The truck stays at work because I dont have a place at the house. Neighbors wouldnt like this sitting out side nor would I really at this time. LOL Its an ext cab long bed so wont fit in the garage either.
Now its not wanting to idle. I got time to put some more gas in the tank and got it started. I can give it gas and no problems with wanting to die but now it didnt want to idle. I reved it up and kept the gas peddle down a little then let up and it died. Still need to check the fuel filter. Could that be the problem. I know its been a while since I wrote about this issue but I have been busy with work and family.
Sounds like the fresh gas softened up some of the crusty diaphrams in the carb, so it's somewhat working properly now. The plugs, wires, cap & rotor might not be up to par now.
