Rear End Size?
I am trying to find out what size my rear end is on my 1984 F-150 and the decal inside my door reads "18" by the axle marking. Can anyone tell me what size rear end I have?

You have a 3.08 geared 3750# Ford axle, most likley a 8.8" due to the 3.08 ratio, 9"ers are usually 3.00, both have the same weight capacity though.

9" gears aren't available in 3.08 ratio, so that limits it to the 8.8".

I have an 81 F-250 and also a 2003 F-350. The rear end ratio is on a metal tag attached to one of the bolts on the rear end pumpkin.

If your bolts are on the back of the rearend then it's 8.8", on the front then it's 9".

I've worked on an '86 EB Bronco with a factory 9". That's the last year they were used because of ABS in '87.

The '84 in my sig has a 9". I'll have to go and look up the axle code to decode the ratio.

14 is an open 3.00, which was only available in the 9". What's on the F-250?

The axle I built from junk parts that you can see in my signature link. I've stayed with the original 3.08s because I have the lowest granny gear available (NP-435), so the hi ratio and tall tires (32s) give me a cheap overdrive with no problems towing heavy stuff. Maybe if I ever get enough spare cash to swap in a ZF, I might go a LITTLE lower, but I doubt it.
