harmonic balancer/timing mark
I pulled a 460 out of a 1984 f-250, block date is really a 1979. It is a external balance motor. I rebuilt the motor put a roller timing chain in it. Put in as straight up timing. Dots are aligned cam dot down crank dot up. Put timing cover on. Then install harmonic balancer and timing marks on balancer opposite side of timming poniter. Pointer is on pass. side. Harmonic balancer marks on driver side. I bought a new balancer thinking the balancer had spun, but new balancer was the same. I never check this before rebuilding so I don't know if it was like this before. Has anyone seen this problem before. Thanks for any help.

Was the one you bough specifically for the '84 engine, or was it a generic 7.5L balancer? The EFI version might have had the pointer on the other side.
In any case, make SURE you have #1 @ TDC and make a new mark on the original balancer, and use that to set time.
