block surface preperation

didn't get any response in headgasket thread so i thought i would ask in a different thread. Was told to use a cup brush on angle grinder to clean the old gasket off the block. Is this correct? razor blade? thinner of some sort? thanks all. hope to have my heads back in a day or two.

To get the head gasket material use a razor blade. Copper spray is what we've used on tractors.

Once you get tired of trying to razor-blade it off and use a wire wheel + angle grinder, make sure to plug your oil & water holes/channels to prevent crud from getting in them. I used wadded up paper towel myself, and then used a pick to pull the wads back out if I couldn't just suck them out with a vacuum.

Got a wire cup brush with the twistes wires for angle grinder. Thats what the machine shop said but i thought it may be a little harsh.

The block's just as hard(if not harder) than the wire brush(it's cast iron, after all); you won't be able to take any material off. You will probably have to push that wire brush pretty hard to actually get the crud off, too. Lay into it at whatever amount of force you need to remove the crud quickly without bogging down your grinder's motor too much; don't push so hard that the bristles bend, though.

Oh, make sure to wear safety glasses, hearing protection, and at least a good cotton-based shirt/jeans -- you will end up throwing crud and a few sparks all around you and onto your clothes. And when your wire brush throws wires, you want a little protection(Fortunately, they don't seem to penetrate my skin when mine throws them.
