power assist trouble
hi I have a 77 F-250 high-boy 351 M I have a prob w the power assist I had the ram and the valve rebuilt lines r correct now the wheel turns on its own all the way to the left and snubs out the pump .... the pump is from a 79 F100 ...need some ideas John

There is a spool in the control valve and I would bet the spool is worn.
This wear causes an internal leak in the system creating the problem you describe.
The spool may look OK and not show apparent damage, but it will be worn on the sealing surfaces.
Spools are not typically replaced in a control valve rebuild, unless there is obvious wear or damage.

The spool, the part I referred to in my previous post, is part of the 3A730 assembly, shown in Number Dummies parts diagram. It is shown immediately above the control valve main body.
Hydraulic pressure leaking past this part will cause the ram to expand or contract causing the tie rod to move left or right.

There are a lot of parts in the control valve. It is possible something was installed incorrectly.
As I remember, the spool could / would go in either way. There wasn't a right or wrong way.
Question for the OP. Why did you have the valve rebuilt?
