It seems awfully dumb to have electric door locks and need a key to unlock the door. It's hard to believe a keyless entry wasn't a option. I remember seeing a (deluxe) short van with the rear air cond that had keyless entry. I thought it was original equipment.
I believe 92 was the first year Ford offered keyless entry and that probably was only on the high end vehicles. But power door locks have been around forever. In the fifties guys would remove the door handles from cars and fill in the holes. Entry was with a hidden switch that actuated a GM starter solenoid. I created keyless entry on a 77 Buick by installing a push button switch in the frame pointing down in line with the door handle. I just stuck my foot under the car and lifted it up.
According to the catalog, a Dealer option was there to add anti-theft, F7AZ 19A361-AA $264.29 REMOTE PLUS SECURITY: W/KEYLESS ENTRY, SIREN, SHOCK SENSOR, LOCK AND UNLOCK DOOR LOCKS, OPEN TRUNK, HARNESS.
There was not a factory option, and the keypads showed up in the mid-80s on Taurus/T-birds, Sable/Cougar, and all Lincolns along with FOBs.
I personally added an after market key-less entry fob system, makes getting in the hatch/vehicle a lot easier, and I would recommend it.
Ford does sell the keypad as an accessory option that is basically a stick on pad that is battery operated, but I do not know if you would be able to program it to work with an AM system.
The Lincolns actually had the 5-buttons on their doors starting in the late 70's or early 80's. The buttons have the markings of 2 numbers, but each button was really only a single switch. I don't think the Aerostar ever had that type of keyless entry.
