So I have quick question regarding how much oil these modular ford motors can hold. Mainly I would like to know if they can run over-full on oil without damage to the engine. I have a friend who has been fixing cars for the last 30+ years and one day when doing an oil change on a 390 Torino GT Fastback, he told me that the FE motors can run over-full without fear.
So of course I was curious if this is a cool Ford V8 thing or its just those motors for some special reason. I noticed when looking at a 5.4 with the oil pan removed that they have this shield looking thing on the bottom of them between the crank and the oil pickup tube. Is this to protect in an over-full condition?
Always interested in learning something, this just happens to be my question of the days. Thanks in advance!
BTW, I have not nor will I run it over-full just because I could. Just interested if maybe adding a little too much would compromise my motor's safety. Thanks again.

The Expy has a 6 qt capacity and just because a buddy says it's okay doesn't necessarily follow along Fords guidelines. I've never seen any Mfg recommend more oil or ATF then required.
The windage tray simply helps keep the oil from blowing up on the crank as well as helping to keep it level in the pan without turmoil from the spinning crank. If you fill and compromise the level, you will see the oil foaming due to that turmoil. Not a good thing.
Pretty common in many engines.
Don't overfill, check your oil level regularly instead.
Thanks for the response. And we never put more in than necessary. From what I hear, having a 1/2 a quart or so over wont hurt it because those motors feed the all oil to the top of them so most of the time there isn't much in the pan while running anyway.
And I always check my fluids at least once a week or when I stop for gas.

Sounds like you have lots of automotive friends or advise.
Never looked into this detail but I bet that you have no more then 1-1 1/2 qt's lubricating the engine at any one time.
I'm not sure what answer you are truly looking for but I don't think you'll find many to agree that overfilling is good.
